Hilma af Klint was a Swedish painter and mystic who is considered one of the earliest pioneers of abstract art. Born in 1862 in Stockholm, she studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where she was trained in traditional painting styles such as portrait and landscape art. In her early career, she worked in a realistic manner, but she was also deeply interested in science, philosophy, and spiritual ideas that explored the unseen structures of reality.

Over time, her artistic practice shifted dramatically toward abstraction, long before it became a recognized movement in modern art. She created large series of works, often inspired by spiritual experiences and symbolic systems, using geometric shapes, bold colors, and complex compositions. One of her most important series, The Swan, explores themes of duality, transformation, and the relationship between opposites such as light and dark or masculine and feminine.

Unlike many artists of her time, af Klint believed her work was meant for a future audience and instructed that it should not be shown publicly until many years after her death. Because of this, her influence was only fully recognized decades later. She died in 1944, leaving behind a vast and visionary body of work that is now seen as foundational to the development of abstract art.
