Karl Brullov was a Russian painter of the Romantic period, born in 1799 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He is best known for his dramatic historical paintings, expressive portraits, and his ability to combine classical artistic techniques with the emotional intensity of Romanticism. His works are particularly famous for their vivid colors, carefully composed figures, powerful storytelling, and detailed representations of human emotion.

Brullov came from an artistic family and began learning drawing and painting at an early age under the guidance of his father, Pavel Brullo. In 1809, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he studied drawing, painting, and classical composition. After graduating with distinction in 1821, he traveled to Italy with financial support from the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. He spent many years working in Rome and other Italian cities, where he studied ancient art, Renaissance masterpieces, and the traditions of European painting. His experiences in Italy played a major role in shaping his artistic style and inspired many of his most important works.

One of his most famous works is The Last Day of Pompeii, painted between 1830 and 1833. The monumental painting depicts the destruction of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It shows people desperately attempting to escape the catastrophe, capturing their fear, suffering, courage, and grief in a dramatic composition. The painting brought Brullov international recognition and established him as one of the most celebrated Russian artists of his time. Other important works include The Horsewoman, Italian Morning, Italian Midday, Bathsheba, Narcissus, and his numerous portraits of members of Russian aristocratic society.

Brullov’s style is characterized by dramatic lighting, rich colors, expressive gestures, and a strong sense of movement. He combined the balanced compositions and idealized figures of Neoclassicism with the emotional intensity and theatrical atmosphere of Romanticism. His historical paintings often feature large groups of people, allowing him to explore different human reactions to moments of crisis and tragedy. In his portraits, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture both the outward elegance and the individual character of his subjects. His paintings brought together technical precision, classical beauty, and psychological depth.

In 1835, Brullov returned to Russia, where he received considerable recognition and became a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He taught numerous students and influenced the development of Russian academic painting during the 19th century. Alongside his historical compositions and portraits, he also created religious paintings, watercolors, and scenes of everyday life. During his later years, his health deteriorated, and he left Russia in 1849 on medical advice. He spent his final years in Italy, continuing to work when his condition allowed.

Brullov died in Manziana, near Rome, in 1852. Although his fame gradually declined in some artistic circles during the later 19th century, his contribution to Russian art remains significant. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Russian Romanticism, and The Last Day of Pompeii continues to be celebrated as one of the most important historical paintings of the 19th century. His ability to unite dramatic storytelling, classical technique, and emotional expression secured his place among the most influential Russian painters of his generation.
