Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, born around 1445 in Florence, Italy. He is best known as one of the most important painters of the Florentine Renaissance and for his elegant paintings of religious and mythological subjects. His works are particularly famous for their graceful figures, flowing lines, delicate colors, and idealized representations of beauty.

Botticelli frequently explored themes from Christianity, classical mythology, literature, and ancient history. He was strongly connected to the Medici family and their intellectual circle in Florence, for whom he created some of his most famous paintings. His artistic training began with the goldsmith’s craft before he became an apprentice to the painter Fra Filippo Lippi around 1464. By 1470, Botticelli had established his own workshop in Florence.

One of his most famous works is The Birth of Venus, painted around 1485. The painting shows the goddess Venus standing on a shell as she emerges from the sea, surrounded by mythological figures. Another major work is Primavera, which depicts several mythological figures in a richly detailed garden. Other important works include The Adoration of the Magi, Venus and Mars, Pallas and the Centaur, Madonna of the Magnificat, and The Mystical Nativity.

Botticelli’s style is characterized by expressive outlines, flowing contours, elegant and elongated figures, and a strong emphasis on decorative composition. Rather than focusing primarily on realistic three-dimensional space, he often used line and graceful movement to create an idealized and poetic atmosphere. His mythological paintings combine classical themes with the intellectual and cultural interests of Renaissance Florence.

Botticelli also worked in Rome, where he was summoned in 1481 to contribute frescoes to the newly completed Sistine Chapel. He painted scenes from the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ before returning to Florence the following year. During the final years of his life, his paintings became more religious and emotionally intense, reflecting the political and religious changes taking place in Florence. He was also influenced by the religious preacher Girolamo Savonarola during this period.

Botticelli died in Florence in 1510. After his death, his reputation declined for several centuries, but interest in his work was revived during the 19th century. Today, he is regarded as one of the defining artists of the Early Renaissance, and works such as The Birth of Venus and Primavera remain among the most famous paintings in Western art.
