Albert Joseph Penot was a French painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, born in 1862 in Paris, France. He is best known for his Symbolist and academic paintings, particularly his mysterious depictions of women, witches, and supernatural figures. His works are characterized by dramatic compositions, dark atmospheres, and a fascination with fantasy and the supernatural.

Penot frequently explored themes of mythology, magic, femininity, and the occult. His paintings often feature powerful female figures surrounded by mysterious or dreamlike settings, reflecting the fascination with symbolism and supernatural themes that was widespread in European art around the turn of the 20th century.

Among his best-known works is La Femme au Coquelicot, as well as paintings depicting witches, sorceresses, and fantastical female figures. His art often combines beautiful, idealized faces with darker surroundings, creating a striking contrast between elegance and mystery.

Penot’s style is characterized by academic realism, detailed figures, dramatic lighting, rich colors, and atmospheric backgrounds. He paid particular attention to the female form and often used flowing hair, elaborate costumes, and symbolic elements to enhance the mystical quality of his compositions.

He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. His paintings reflect the academic traditions of French art while also incorporating the mysterious and imaginative themes associated with Symbolism.

Albert Joseph Penot died in 1930 in Paris. Today, he is particularly remembered for his atmospheric paintings of women and supernatural subjects, which combine the technical precision of academic painting with the mysterious appeal of Symbolist art.
