Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter of the Northern Renaissance, born around 1390 in the region of Maaseik, in present-day Belgium. He is regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 15th century and is particularly famous for his remarkable attention to detail, realistic portraits, and innovative use of oil paint.

Van Eyck frequently painted religious scenes, portraits, and wealthy patrons. His works are known for their extraordinary precision, symbolic details, and convincing representation of textures such as fabric, metal, glass, and skin. He played an important role in establishing oil painting as a major artistic technique in Northern Europe.

Among his most famous works are the Ghent Altarpiece, created with his brother Hubert van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait, Portrait of a Man in a Turban, and The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin. These paintings demonstrate his ability to combine religious symbolism with highly realistic environments and figures.

Van Eyck’s style is characterized by meticulous detail, luminous colors, sophisticated light effects, and a strong sense of three-dimensional realism. He carefully incorporated symbolic objects into his compositions, giving even small details religious or cultural meaning.

He worked primarily in Bruges and served as a court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. His position allowed him to travel on diplomatic missions while also producing portraits and religious commissions for the court and wealthy patrons.

Jan van Eyck died in Bruges in 1441. His innovative approach to oil painting and his extraordinary ability to reproduce the visible world had a lasting influence on European art. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest masters of the Northern Renaissance and a pioneer of realistic oil painting.
