Tom Lea was an American painter, illustrator, muralist, and writer, born in 1907 in El Paso, Texas. He is best known for his powerful depictions of the American Southwest, historical scenes, and especially his artwork documenting the experiences of American soldiers during World War II.

Lea developed a strong connection to the landscapes and culture of the Southwest. His paintings often portray deserts, mountains, ranches, cowboys, and Indigenous peoples, capturing the harsh beauty and vastness of the American frontier.

During World War II, Lea worked as a war correspondent and artist for Life magazine. He traveled with American troops and created firsthand paintings and drawings of combat, including some of the most intense depictions of the Pacific War. His famous painting The Two Thousand Yard Stare became an iconic representation of the psychological exhaustion experienced by soldiers.

Among his notable works are The Two Thousand Yard Stare, 2000 Yard Stare, The Price, and numerous paintings depicting the landscapes and history of Texas and the American Southwest.

Lea’s style is characterized by strong composition, realistic figures, dramatic lighting, earthy colors, and a powerful sense of movement. His experience as an illustrator gave his paintings a direct and narrative quality, allowing him to communicate both the physical reality and emotional intensity of his subjects.

He also created murals and illustrations and wrote several books about the American Southwest and his wartime experiences. His work often combined historical research with personal observation, giving his paintings a strong sense of authenticity.

Tom Lea died in El Paso in 2001 at the age of 93. Today, he is remembered as an important American artist, particularly for his powerful portrayals of the Southwest, American history, and the realities of war.
