John Everett Millais was a British painter and illustrator of the Victorian era, born in 1829 in Southampton, England. He is best known as one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and for his highly detailed paintings inspired by literature, poetry, history, and nature. His works are particularly famous for their vivid colors, intricate details, rich symbolism, and emotional storytelling.

Millais showed exceptional artistic talent from a young age and studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1848, at the age of nineteen, he helped establish the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood together with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. The group sought to move away from the academic conventions of Victorian art and return to the detailed observation, vivid colors, and sincere expression they associated with artists before Raphael.

One of his most famous works is Ophelia, painted between 1851 and 1852. The painting depicts Shakespeare’s tragic character Ophelia floating in a river shortly before her death, surrounded by carefully observed flowers and vegetation. The work is celebrated for its luminous colors, extraordinary natural detail, and poetic atmosphere. Another important painting is Christ in the House of His Parents, which caused controversy because of its realistic depiction of the Holy Family. Other notable works include A Huguenot, on St Bartholomew’s Day, The Order of Release, 1746, Mariana, and The Woodman’s Daughter.

Millais’s early style is characterized by intense realism, brilliant colors, precise outlines, and an extraordinary attention to natural detail. He frequently painted directly from nature and incorporated flowers, plants, landscapes, and other elements with remarkable accuracy. His compositions often combine literary or historical subjects with rich symbolism, creating paintings that are both visually detailed and emotionally expressive.

Millais also developed close relationships with writers and poets of his time, including John Ruskin and Anthony Trollope. His marriage to Effie Gray, who had previously been married to Ruskin, attracted considerable attention in Victorian society. Over the course of his career, Millais gradually moved away from the highly detailed Pre-Raphaelite style and developed a broader and more commercially successful approach to painting. He produced portraits, landscapes, historical scenes, and illustrations, becoming one of the most successful British artists of his generation.

In the later years of his career, Millais received increasing recognition from the British establishment. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1863 and became a full Royal Academician in 1867. In 1896, shortly before his death, he was elected President of the Royal Academy, one of the highest honors available to a British artist.

Millais died in London in 1896 at the age of 67. After his death, his reputation changed as artistic movements such as Impressionism and Modernism gained prominence, and his later commercial works received less critical attention. However, interest in his Pre-Raphaelite paintings was revived during the 20th century. Today, John Everett Millais is regarded as one of the defining artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and works such as Ophelia remain among the most recognizable paintings of Victorian Britain.
