Albrecht Dürer was a German painter, printmaker, and draftsman of the Northern Renaissance, born in 1471 in Nuremberg, Germany. He is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the Renaissance and is particularly famous for his highly detailed engravings, woodcuts, portraits, and religious paintings.

Dürer explored a wide range of subjects, including religion, mythology, nature, science, and the human figure. He was fascinated by proportion, perspective, and the precise observation of the natural world, which became important elements of his artistic work.

Among his most famous works are Melencolia I, Knight, Death and the Devil, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Praying Hands, and Young Hare. His self-portraits are also highly regarded and demonstrate his remarkable ability to capture both physical appearance and personality.

Dürer’s style is characterized by extraordinary precision, intricate linework, detailed textures, and carefully constructed compositions. His prints allowed him to distribute his art widely across Europe, making him one of the first artists to achieve international fame through printed works.

He traveled to Italy several times, where he studied Renaissance art and encountered the works of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Giovanni Bellini. He combined Italian Renaissance ideas about proportion and perspective with the detailed tradition of Northern European art.

Dürer was also interested in mathematics, geometry, and the study of nature. He wrote several influential books on artistic theory, perspective, and human proportions, demonstrating his interest in both art and scientific knowledge.

Throughout his career, Dürer worked for wealthy patrons, religious institutions, and members of the European nobility. His reputation spread far beyond Germany, and his prints became highly influential among artists throughout Europe.

Albrecht Dürer died in Nuremberg in 1528 at the age of 56. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest masters of the Northern Renaissance, celebrated for his technical mastery, intellectual curiosity, and lasting influence on European art.
