Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and one of the most influential pioneers of modern abstract art, born in 1872 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He is best known for his geometric compositions using straight lines, rectangular forms, and primary colors.

Mondrian began his career painting landscapes, trees, and windmills in a more traditional style. Over time, he increasingly simplified natural forms and moved toward complete abstraction, influenced by Cubism and his interest in geometry and balance.

Among his most famous works are Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow, Broadway Boogie Woogie, Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, and his series of paintings featuring grids of black lines and blocks of color.

His mature style, known as Neoplasticism, is characterized by horizontal and vertical black lines, white spaces, and carefully balanced areas of red, blue, and yellow. Mondrian believed that art could express universal harmony through simple geometric relationships.

Mondrian was a founding member of De Stijl, an influential Dutch art movement that promoted abstraction, simplicity, and geometric order. His ideas later influenced architecture, graphic design, fashion, and modern visual culture.

In the 1910s and 1920s, Mondrian lived and worked in Paris, where he developed his abstract style. During World War II, he moved to London and later to New York, where the energy of the city inspired works such as Broadway Boogie Woogie.

Piet Mondrian died in New York City in 1944 at the age of 71. Today, he is regarded as one of the defining figures of modern art, celebrated for transforming simple lines, shapes, and colors into compositions that continue to influence design and visual culture.
