Tsuchiya Koitsu was a Japanese painter and woodblock print artist, born in 1870 in Hamamatsu, Japan. He is best known for his atmospheric landscape prints and his contributions to the shin-hanga movement, a 20th-century revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. His works are particularly famous for their beautiful depictions of Japanese landscapes, dramatic lighting, changing weather, and peaceful nighttime scenes.

Koitsu frequently portrayed temples, bridges, streets, rivers, mountains, and traditional Japanese architecture. He had a particular talent for capturing different moods of the day and night, often showing scenes illuminated by moonlight, lanterns, rain, snow, or warm evening light. His prints combine traditional Japanese composition with a refined attention to atmosphere and natural beauty.

Among his most famous works are Cherry Blossoms at Gion, Night Rain at Miyajima, Lake Haruna in Snow, Kiyomizu Temple at Night, and Evening Glow at Miyajima. These prints demonstrate his ability to transform familiar Japanese locations into peaceful and atmospheric scenes. His depictions of Kyoto, Tokyo, Mount Fuji, and other famous locations became particularly popular among collectors of Japanese woodblock prints.

Koitsu’s style is characterized by delicate color gradients, precise lines, dramatic lighting, and carefully balanced compositions. He often used deep blues, soft greens, warm oranges, and subtle shades of purple to create a strong sense of atmosphere. Rain, snow, moonlight, and reflections are especially important elements in his work, giving his landscapes a calm and poetic quality.

Koitsu was originally trained in traditional Japanese painting and woodblock techniques. He worked for a period under the famous artist Kobayashi Kiyochika, whose influence can be seen in Koitsu’s dramatic approach to light and atmospheric effects. Although Koitsu produced prints during a period when Japan was rapidly modernizing, his work remained strongly connected to the visual traditions of ukiyo-e while incorporating the more detailed and atmospheric qualities associated with shin-hanga.

During the early 20th century, Koitsu became increasingly associated with the publisher Doi Sadaichi, who played an important role in producing and distributing his woodblock prints. His works were created using traditional multi-block printing techniques, in which different carved woodblocks were used to build up layers of color and detail. This process allowed Koitsu to achieve the subtle gradients and atmospheric effects that became characteristic of his landscapes.

Tsuchiya Koitsu died in 1949 in Japan at the age of 79. His work has remained popular among collectors and admirers of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly for its peaceful atmosphere, elegant compositions, and beautiful treatment of light. Today, he is regarded as an important artist of the shin-hanga tradition, and his landscapes continue to represent the timeless beauty of 20th-century Japanese woodblock art.
