Utagawa Hiroshige was a Japanese painter and printmaker and one of the most celebrated artists of the ukiyo-e tradition. Born in Edo, now Tokyo, in 1797, he was the son of an official in the shogunal fire department. After developing an early interest in art, Hiroshige became a student of the artist Utagawa Toyohiro and began his career creating prints of actors, warriors, and beautiful women.

Hiroshige became best known for his landscape prints, which brought a new sense of atmosphere, emotion, and poetry to the genre. His breakthrough came in the 1830s with The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, a series depicting famous locations along one of Japan's most important travel routes. The series became enormously popular and established Hiroshige as one of Japan's leading landscape artists.

His work is characterized by carefully balanced compositions, striking perspectives, subtle color gradations, and a strong sensitivity to weather and seasons. Rain, snow, mist, moonlight, and changing skies became important elements in his images, often placing small human figures within vast natural landscapes. This gave his prints a calm, lyrical quality and made nature feel both monumental and intimate.

Among his most famous works is One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, a large series portraying scenes from everyday life and well-known places around Edo. Hiroshige often experimented with unusual viewpoints, close-up foreground elements, and dramatic compositions, creating images that feel remarkably modern despite being produced in the nineteenth century.

Hiroshige died in Edo in 1858 at the age of 62. His influence extended far beyond Japan, particularly during the nineteenth-century Japonisme movement, and his atmospheric landscapes had a lasting impact on European and American artists and collectors. His work remains some of the most recognized and admired Japanese woodblock art in the world.
