Michelangelo

(Italian, 1475 - 1564)

Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian Renaissance artist, sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, widely considered one of the greatest artists in history. Born in 1475 in Caprese, Italy, he showed exceptional talent from a young age and was trained in Florence, where he was influenced by the artistic environment of the Renaissance.

He is best known for his masterpieces in sculpture and painting, especially David, Pietà, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. The statue of David is admired for its perfect proportions, anatomical precision, and powerful expression of human strength and ideal beauty. Pietà, which shows the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus, is known for its emotional depth and delicate craftsmanship.

One of Michelangelo’s greatest achievements is the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted between 1508 and 1512. It features detailed scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the famous image of the creation of Adam, where God and Adam reach toward each other with outstretched hands. The work is celebrated for its complexity, dynamic figures, and dramatic storytelling.

Although he considered himself primarily a sculptor, Michelangelo also made major contributions to architecture. He worked on the design of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, shaping its iconic dome, which became a defining feature of the city’s skyline.

Michelangelo’s art is characterized by powerful human forms, intense emotion, and a deep sense of movement and tension. His work reflects both physical perfection and spiritual depth, capturing the ideals of the High Renaissance.

He died in 1564 in Rome, leaving behind a legacy that deeply influenced Western art for centuries.
