Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker, born in 1863 in Løten, Norway. He is best known as a major pioneer of Expressionism, an artistic movement that used intense colors, distorted forms, and emotional subjects to express inner feelings rather than simply depict the visible world.

Munch often explored themes of anxiety, love, illness, loneliness, and death. His childhood was marked by loss: his mother and one of his sisters died of tuberculosis while he was still young. These experiences deeply influenced his art and gave many of his works a powerful, personal atmosphere.

His most famous work is "The Scream," created in 1893. The painting shows a figure overwhelmed by anxiety beneath a dramatic sky and has become one of the most recognizable images in modern art. Other important works include "The Sick Child," "Madonna," "Vampire," and "The Dance of Life."

Munch’s style is characterized by expressive lines, bold colors, and simplified or distorted figures. Rather than aiming for realistic detail, he used painting to communicate strong emotional states and universal human experiences. He also worked extensively with prints, including lithographs and woodcuts.

Munch’s work influenced generations of modern artists and played an important role in the development of Expressionism. He continued to create art throughout his life and died in 1944, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential artists of modern art history.
