Edward Moran

Edward Moran was an American painter, born in 1829 in Bolton, England. He is best known for his atmospheric marine paintings depicting ships, oceans, storms, and historic maritime events. His works often combine detailed observation with the dramatic and romantic qualities of 19th-century American landscape painting.

Moran frequently explored the relationship between humans and the sea, portraying sailing ships navigating calm waters, rough seas, sunsets, and dramatic weather. He was particularly interested in historical and symbolic maritime subjects, often connecting the ocean with exploration, adventure, and American history.

Among his notable works are The Departure of Columbus, The Arrival of Columbus, The Discovery of America, and numerous paintings depicting ships at sea. His maritime scenes are admired for their expansive compositions and strong sense of atmosphere.

Edward Moran came from an artistic family and was the brother of the painter Thomas Moran. He initially trained in England before moving to the United States, where he developed his career and became closely associated with American marine painting.
