Gustav Klimt

(Austrian, 1862 - 1918)

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most important figures of the Vienna Secession movement. Born in 1862 near Vienna, he originally trained in a traditional academic style and worked on decorative murals for public buildings together with his brother Ernst Klimt and artist Franz Matsch. However, Klimt gradually moved away from academic conventions and helped found the Vienna Secession in 1897, a group of artists who aimed to break free from conservative art institutions and explore more modern and expressive forms of art.

Klimt is best known for his highly decorative and symbolic painting style, which often combines sensual themes with intricate patterns and rich ornamentation. His most famous period, known as the “Golden Phase,” is characterized by the extensive use of gold leaf, inspired by Byzantine mosaics and Japanese art. Works such as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I come from this period and are among the most recognizable paintings in art history.

His paintings often focus on themes such as love, femininity, eroticism, life, and death. Klimt’s style is unique because it blends realistic portraiture, especially in the faces and hands of his subjects, with abstract, flat decorative surfaces filled with geometric shapes, floral motifs, and symbolic patterns. This contrast creates a dreamlike and almost otherworldly effect.

Throughout his career, Klimt challenged traditional ideas of fine art and helped shape the development of modern art in Europe. He died in 1918 in Vienna, but his influence continues to be strong, and his works remain some of the most admired and studied pieces in art history.
