Diego Velázquez was a Spanish painter, born in 1599 in Seville. He became one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age and is widely regarded as one of the greatest portrait painters in Western art.
Velázquez is best known for his portraits of the Spanish royal family, particularly King Philip IV and members of his court. His paintings are celebrated for their remarkable realism, subtle expressions, natural poses, and sophisticated use of light.
Among his most famous works are Las Meninas, The Surrender of Breda, Venus at Her Mirror, and Portrait of Pope Innocent X. These masterpieces demonstrate his ability to combine realistic observation with complex compositions and psychological depth.
His early career was influenced by the dramatic realism of Caravaggio and the Spanish tradition of naturalistic painting. Velázquez initially produced religious scenes and genre paintings before developing his distinctive approach to portraiture.
